In the FT, Tim Hayward goes to Cafe Cecilia in Hackney, London as does Marina O'Loughlin in the Sunday Times. They both like it a lot.
In the Guardian, Grace Dent goes to the gastropub, The Baring in Islington, London as does Jimi Faruewa in the Standard. They both like it a lot too.
In the Independent, Sean Russell finds good Italian vegan food at Plant Club near Stoke Newington.
In the Mail on Sunday, Tom Parker-Bowles appreciates the Twenty Two in Mayfair, London as it’s inexpensive for the area.
In the Observer, Jay Rayner travels to Edinburgh for a great dinner at the Palmerston.
In the Telegraph, William Sitwell disagrees with other critics as he doesn’t like Lisboeta in Fitzrovia, London. My younger daughter went last week and loved it.
In the Times, Giles Coren was in Pembrokeshire again at Grub Kitchen where half the dishes on the menu were made from insects.
Additionally, there was an article about the best burgers in London in the Standard.
Recipes
There was no discernible theme in the recipes this week in this changeover from the end of the summer holidays to a new School year.
Honey and Co are back in the FT after a summer holiday break with a recipe for a rice noodle salad with lime, spring onions and cashews which takes minutes to make.
Genevieve Ko from the NYT showed how to throw a Mexican tacos party in the Independent, with recipes for carne asada to stuff in corn tortillas and arroz rojo (red rice).
I always like Eleanor Staefel’s practical recipes in the Telegraph and this one for spaghetti with rainbow chard and anchovies and Parmesan could use up what you might in the house already.
There was an autumnal theme in the Guardian with Ravneet Gill’s recipe for damson crumble cakes, Thomasina Miers’ recipe for roast beet, blackberry and barley salad with goat’s cheese and Nigel Slater’s recipes for baked peaches with cinnamon cream sauce, and in the Observer, pork miso and a walnut and fig cake.
Aleksander Taralezhkov also shared his delicious sounding Bulgarian recipes for green bean plakiya with roast garlic and fresh pepper dolma in the Guardian.
Books
There’s a seasonal glut of books this week as well, starting with Mary Berry who has a TV series starting this month. ‘Cook and Share’ will be shown on BBC2 and BBCiPlayer from Wednesday September 7 at 8pm
Cook and Share: 120 Delicious New Fuss-free Recipes by Mary Berry is excerpted in the Mail with recipes such as baked ricotta cheesecake with blackberry coulis.
Gino’s Italy: Like Mamma Used to Make by Gino D’Acampo was featured in the Mail on Sunday with his family recipes including spicy fish soup and banoffee pie with amaretto biscuits.
Real Life Recipes by Tom Kerridge was extracted in the Sunday Times with his recipes for sweet potato and kale curry, smoky beef bean pie, and British onion soup
The Italian Pantry by Theo Randall was featured in the Times with recipes for Amalfi lemon cheesecake, baked tiger prawns with tomatoes, chicken thighs with lemon and olives, and tagliatelle with mushrooms, pine nuts and pancetta.
Big Has Home: Recipes from North London to North Cyprus, by Hasan Semay, was featured in the Guardian with a peppery aubergine and potato salad , atom, a labneh-like dip with spicy browned butter, and ezme, a spicy salsa.
